The community service Van is a reality! To requisition, please use this Application for Community Service.

The Community Service Van

The van was bought by Mainstreet Claremont in September of 2008 and conveyed to the Sullivan county Department of Corrections. The repair and up fit was accomplished by the mechanic shop at the Sullivan County Department of Corrections with the assistance of the Whelen Engineering firm in Charlestown who donated the emergency lighting. Lavalleys of Claremont has donated shovels, gloves and rakes. Community projects like weeding, planting, over painting of graffiti, shoveling snow, clearing brush and doing community service in City of Claremont began in the month of September 2008. Offenders doing community service do not compete with city employees or private contractors, but focus on nonprofit and charitable requests that will pass through the MSC application process before going the Sullivan community corrections staff.

Application for Community Service

There is still much to do as MSC wishes to raise $10,000 towards the CSV project to pay off the purchase of the van, its repairs and modifications and support the project going forward.

Before proceeding with this project, MSC received the support of the Sullivan County commissioners, the City Manager, Police chief, Public Works director, as well as downtown businesses and property owners.

The Community Service van will result in hundreds of hours each year of physical and visual improvements to the City of Claremont and the other cities in Sullivan County as well as playing a significant role in furthering community service goals of the Sullivan County Jail. By Mid November of 2008 the project had already exceeded 120 man hours of service.

This project provides hours of community service to the beautification Claremont each year while creating a collateral asset of 3 days a week and hundreds more hours of service to other cities in Sullivan County.

Fiscal Agent

This year Mainstreet has adopted a policy to act as fiscal Agent for other organizations that pursue similar goals and further the mission of Mainstreet. We are the fiscal agent to the City Center Business Alliance and the JSL having accepted thousands of dollars from the city, which is earmarked to meet their goals. We hope that our role as fiscal agent will spur more volunteer efforts in the city center.
